GULLHÚFAN was designed for Hörpugull with our hand-dyed Icelandic plötulopi at the centre of the design. It is a mystery knitting project: each kit contains a mix of colours, and you will not know exactly how your hat will look until you knit it.
The hat is knitted holding two strands of plötulopi together. As the colours change, different combinations meet throughout the hat, creating new colour blends and transitions along the way. No two GULLHÚFAN hats will be exactly alike.

Which colours will I receive?
Each kit contains a surprise mix of hand-dyed Hörpugull colours. The exact colours and combinations vary between kits and are not selected in advance.
Will my hat look exactly like the hats in the photos?
No. GULLHÚFAN is a mystery knitting project, and the colours vary from kit to kit. Because two strands are held together while knitting, the colours also combine differently as you work through the hat. The photos show examples of finished GULLHÚFAN hats rather than the exact result you will receive.
What is Icelandic plötulopi?
Plötulopi is a traditional Icelandic unspun wool, commonly known internationally as pencil roving. Unlike spun yarn, the wool fibres are lightly drawn together rather than twisted into a finished yarn, making the strand more delicate to handle while knitting.
If the strand breaks, the ends can simply be overlapped and gently rubbed together between your fingers.
Plötulopi can be knitted using a single strand or with two or more strands held together. GULLHÚFAN is knitted holding two strands of Þingborgarlopi together.

What is special about Þingborgarlopi?
Þingborgarlopi is an authentic Icelandic plötulopi – the traditional unspun wool used to knit Icelandic lopapeysa sweaters.
It is produced in Iceland by Ístex from carefully selected, first-quality Icelandic lambswool. Mild cleaning agents are used when washing the wool, with the aim of preserving as much as possible of its natural characteristics.
The careful selection of lambswool and gentle processing result in a soft, lightweight plötulopi that retains the characteristic qualities of Icelandic wool.
