Material: 100% Icelandic lambswool
Yarn type: Icelandic plötulopi (pencil roving)
Length and weight: 170 m / 50 g per skein
Recommended needle size: 3–5 mm

Each skein contains a single strand of genuine Icelandic Þingborgarlopi, made in Iceland from carefully selected, first-quality lambswool from Icelandic sheep. Þingborgarlopi is an Icelandic plötulopi – a lightweight, unspun wool commonly known internationally as pencil roving. The wool is sourced from Icelandic sheep and processed in Iceland before being hand-dyed by Hörpugull in South Iceland.

The natural white wool is hand-dyed in small batches using acid dyes, allowing us to create bright, clear colours. As each batch is dyed by hand, slight variations may occur between dye lots and individual skeins

This colour is inspired by the flowers of hungarian lilac (Syringa josikaea). Hungarian lilac is a hardy, elegant shrub that produces fragrant clusters of purple flowers in early to midsummer. Its blossoms attract bees and other pollinators while filling the garden with both colour and fragrance.

Washing instructions
Soak the garment in lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F) with a mild wool detergent for about five minutes. Gently press out the water without wringing and rinse in clean water at the same temperature. Press out the excess water again, lay the garment flat on a towel, shape it and leave it to dry.

Frequently asked questions

Is this genuine Icelandic wool?
Yes. Þingborgarlopi is made in Iceland from 100% Icelandic lambswool, sourced from Icelandic sheep. The wool is processed in Iceland and our coloured yarn is then hand-dyed by Hörpugull in South Iceland. This is genuine Icelandic plötulopi – not an Icelandic-style yarn or an imported wool product.

Will the colour be exactly as shown in the photos?
Not necessarily. Our wool is hand-dyed in small batches, so colours may vary slightly between dye lots and even between skeins from the same batch. If you order more than one skein in the same colour, we will select skeins that match as closely as possible.

What is Icelandic plötulopi?
Plötulopi is a traditional Icelandic unspun wool, commonly known internationally as pencil roving. Unlike spun yarn, the wool fibres are lightly drawn together rather than twisted into a finished yarn, making the strand more delicate to handle while knitting. If the strand breaks, the ends can simply be overlapped and gently rubbed together between your fingers. Plötulopi can be knitted using a single strand or with two or more strands held together, depending on the weight and feel you want. It can also be combined with another yarn, such as a fine spun wool yarn for added strength.

What is special about Þingborgarlopi?
Þingborgarlopi is produced in Iceland by Ístex from carefully selected, first-quality Icelandic lambswool. Mild cleaning agents are used when washing the wool, with the aim of preserving as much as possible of its natural characteristics. The careful selection of lambswool and gentle processing result in a soft, lightweight plötulopi that retains the characteristic qualities of Icelandic wool.
