BERGUR Hiking Sweater is a lightweight and flexible Icelandic lopi wool sweater designed for outdoor adventures and traditional Nordic knitting.

The sweater is knitted using single-ply unspun Icelandic lopi (plötulopi) hand-dyed by Hörpugull. This unique yarn gives the sweater a light, airy feel while still providing the warmth and character that Icelandic wool is known for.

Thanks to the lightweight lopi yarn, the sweater is warm yet easy to pack and comfortable to wear – making it a perfect companion for hiking trips and outdoor exploration.

FAQ

Is this kit suitable for beginners?
The BERGUR hiking sweater is best suited for knitters who are comfortable with basic knitting techniques and knitting in the round. It is generally considered an intermediate project.

What is plötulopi?
Plötulopi is a traditional Icelandic unspun wool (pencil roving) that is used to make authentic Icelandic Lopi sweaters. Because lopi is unspun wool it is fragile and needs to be handled delicately but because of the unique characteristics of the Icelandic wool it's surprisingly strong. Plötulopi can be used one thread but also in two or three threads held together or with other yarn type. HERE you can read more about what makes our lopi unique!

Why is Icelandic wool so warm?
Icelandic wool has a unique dual fibre structure. The soft inner fibres (þel) provide insulation, while the outer fibres (tog) are strong and naturally water-repellent. Together they create a yarn that is warm, breathable and durable. HERE you can read more about the unique characteristics of the Icelandic wool.

Are the colours exactly the same as shown in the pictures?
Our yarn is hand-dyed in small batches, so no two skeins are completely identical. Slight variations in colour give each knitting project a unique and natural character.
